DISTRICT 24 @ Freehold Twp

DIRECTIONS TO FREEHOLD TWP

SCHEDULE

Quarters: 10:00am
Semis: 1:00pm
Finals: 4:30pm

Teams: CBA, Freehold Twp, Hamilton West, Monmouth, Notre Dame, Nottingham, Ocean Township, Red Bank Catholic, Shore Regional, Willingboro

106: Top-seeded Nick Schutzenhofer was 28-1 and won the D22 Championship a year ago before having to withdraw from the Regions. He's back at 106, went 30-2 this year, and is the strong favorite here. Ocean's Jack Nies, a freshman, is the 2-seed and defeated #3 Gregory Dalosio of Nottingham, a senior, by pin last week to clinch the 2nd seed.

113: Another top-seed and strong favorite for CBA in junior Richie Koehler. After winning D22 and R6 as a frosh, Koehler went on to place 6th in AC. He finished 2nd in both D22 and R6 last season. At #2 is Shore's Matt Klemser, who is 25-9. Ocean's John Santos, the lone senior in this weight, is in the 3rd-seed, while Monmouth frosh Shane Learn is at #4.

120: Top-seeded Tariq Morton of Nottingham placed 3rd in D25 last season. He faced the #2 seed, Adam Manzo of Ocean, last week and pulled out a 7-5 win. In the #3 spot is Shore's outstanding frosh, Al Desantis, who enters the postseason with a record of 33-2. Freehold Twp sophomore Brian Lee had a nice regular season winning 20 bouts, and earned the 4th seed here.

126: Notre Dame junior Joe Schneider outpointed Ocean's standout frosh, Alex Poniros, for the top-seed. At #3 is Shore's Brad Smuro, who finished 3rd in D23 at 106 in 2016. #4 Sam LaCorte of CBA gets Freehold Twp's Brandon Pagano in the 4/5 opener. LaCorte won their previous bout via decision, 4-0. Pagano received the 5-seed as a result of his 8-4 win over #6 Daniel Dempsey of Nottingham.

132: In his first varsity season, Ocean senior Nick Villapiano claimed to the top seed after going 24-3 during the regular season. Among his wins are a pinfall victory over the #2 seed, Ethan Byrne of RBC, who finished 3rd in D22 a year ago. At the #3 seed is Notre Dame's Dan Schneider who holds wins over the #4 and #5 seeds here.

138: The top seed here is Ocean's Jake Benner, a 2-time District Champion that advanced to AC last season after placing 2nd in the Region. He is a strong favorite here. Monmouth's Tyler Flynn claimed the #2 seed by 1.5 seeding points over Shore's 24-bout winner, Jarret Weir.

145: One of the more wide open weights here. CBA's Christian Recantini is the top seed at 17-15. Ocean's Saif Ali claimed the #2 seed and has a 2-0 win over the #3 seed, Dean Smolokoff of Shore.

152: This should be a tough top 3 for the rest of the field to crack. At #1 is Freehold Twp's Michael Cenname, who holds a 7-6 win over the #2 seed, Rommy Abouelela of Nottingham. At #3 is Shore's Jack McCrae, a sophomore that enters the tournament at 26-9.

160: Another top seed for Freehold Twp as the Patriots' Kyle Hillermeier got the #1. At #2 though, is Shore's unbeaten Austin Cannon (26-0) who did not participate in last season's Districts after completing a perfect regular season. In all, Cannon has won 44 bouts in a row, and has not lost since 2014. This is the 3rd weight in a row with no previous medal winners.

170: Let's make that four in row. Top-seeded Jonathon Jacobs (25-10) of Nottingham and #2 Steven Cmielewski (20-6) of RBC are the only wrestlers above .500 in what should be another wide open weight class that will hand out medals to three first-timers.

182: Top-seeded Gabriel Williams (26-9) of Nottingham gets us off the medal drought slide, as he finished 3rd in D25 last season. The 2-seed, Sam Houstan (22-10) of CBA, faced Williams back in December in the Collingswood Tournament and dropped a close 3-2 decision. At #3 is David Stout (20-8) of Hamilton West, #4 is Mike Rosati (24-10) of Shore, and #5 is Michael Carlucci (21-12) of Freehold Twp, making the top 5 here all 20+ match winners.

195: 18-2 junior Eric Quartey has had some big wins this season, and it enabled him to outpoint CBA's Cameron DiGirogio for the #1 seed. At #3 is Monmouth's current wins leader, Ricky Voss. At 13-1, we'll have to call Willingboro senior Amir Murray a bit of a wildcard coming out of the 5-spot.

220: #1 Devion Stokes has been a solid presence in the top of the lineup for Nottingham and holds a pinfall win over #3 Thomas Burns of Notre Dame, and a 3-0 win over #4 Zachary Harding of Hamilton West. At #2 is Ocean's Clayton Oates, who has had a breakout year going 21-7 following an 11-18 year last season.

Hwt: #1 Sylvester Freeman of Nottingham is the wins leader of this group with 22. Among them, is a pin over #2 Omar Santos of Notre Dame, and a 3-2 win over #3 Austin Colbert of Freehold Twp. Colbert has had some nice wins for the Patriots, splitting time as needed at 220/Hwt. Likewise, #4 Michael Griggs of RBC has some quality wins and is capable of breaking into the Top 3 here.
