2017 DISTRICT 28 PREVIEW
DISTRICT 28 @ Collingswood
Teams: Collingswood, Gloucester City, Lenape, Maple Shade, Palmyra, Paul VI, Pemberton, Shawnee, TR North, TR South
106: Just a seven man bracket here. The top seed is Collingswood freshman Andrew Clark who enters the tournament listed at 26-2, but I have him at 29-5 (and I'm usually right on these things!). In the #2 seed is TR North's Ryan Rosenthal. He opens with Shawnee's #7 Ethan Greenberg.
113: Sophomore Nick Reilly of TR North is the top seed here. Reilly was the D24 champ and 4th-place finisher at 113 in R6 last season. At #2 is Shawnee's Ed Morriarity, the D27 runner-up at 106 in 2016. Maple Shade senior John Patton jumped from the #5 seed to #3 on the strength of his pin over #4 Justin Sooto of Palmyra back in early January.
120: #1 Matt Higgins of Shawnee punched a ticket to AC last season after placing 3rd at both D27 and R7. He holds regular season wins over both #2 Kyle Trout of Lenape and #3 Joe Tenuto of Collingswood. Trout was a 3rd place finisher in D27 last year. Timothy Yuro is the Shore's high seed here at #7.
126: The Toms Rivers take the top two seeds here. #1 is Nicholas Gallicchio of TR South. Gallicchio, a 2-time D24 champ, was actually pre-seeded behind TR North's frosh #2 Nick Boggiano, but jumped ahead of him by virtue of his 4-2 win back in mid January. There is work to be done before a possible rematch can take place. Boggiano has #3 Joe Downing of Collingswood, the D28 champ at 120 last year, as his likely semis opponent, while Gallicchio will have to beat the 4/5 winner of David Ott of Gloucester City vs. Gavone Pallenti of Pemberton.
132: Deep field here as all nine entrants have at least 13 wins. TR South's Zach Martin, a D24 champ last season, received the #1 seed and will be looking for his 3rd District medal overall. 25-2 senior Robert McGrogen of Lenape is at #2, while 26-bout winner Austin Piliro of Gloucester City is at #3.
138: #1 Riley Tufts of Shawnee was the runner-up at 138 in D27 a year ago. He defeated both #2 Will West of Collingswood and #3 Russell Steele of Pemberton during the regular season, making him the favorite here. At #4 is TR South's Riley Cheong who opens with #5 Hunter DeBlieu of Lenape. The winner will face Tufts.
145: Junior Cole Corrigan, a 2-time D24 champ and 2-time R6 runner-up, placed 7th in the State at 138 in 2016. He enter the tournament at a clean 27-0 and is a huge favorite here.
152: Pemberton sophomore Joe Wilson (20-1) was a D27 runner-up as a frosh and is the top seed. The 2-seed, Kyle Kendzierski of Paul VI, finished 3rd at D28 at 132 last season. TR North's Juan Nakano received the #3 seed and will open with Gloucester City's Coby Hall (18-9). The 4/5 bout between Collingswood's Billy Plianthos and Shawnee's Dalton Short is a rematch of a bout wrestled two weeks ago, won by Plianthos, 4-2.
160: TR North's Mike DeGennaro, a D24 runner-up in '16, beat out Collingswood's Sean Miles for the top-seed here by two points. Shore fans may remember Miles as the 160-pound champ at this year's Neptune Classic.
170: Top-seeded Mark Gross of Shawnee is a 2-time D27 medal winner, and was one win away from a trip to AC in 2016. #2 seed Adam Goodwin, also a 2-time District medalist, completed the regular season at a perfect 21-0. TR North's Patrick O'Donnell is also a 2-time District medal winner, and was one win away from a trip to Boardwalk Hall last season. At #4 is TR South's Vinny Merlo who opens with Gloucester City's Jared Morris in the 4/5.
182: You'd have to call Collingswood's top seeded Aaron Carter (28-6) the favorite here. A D28 runner-up at 132! last season, he's the only wrestler here over .500, with the exception of #7 Michael Nakano of TR North who is 4-1. TR South's Josh Mendez is the #2 seed and will open with Nakano in the quarters.
195: Collingswood's top-seeded Michael Taulane is a 2-time D28 champ and was the 170pound R7 champ in 2016. Pemberton junior #2 Alex Cawley was the D25 champ at 220 last season and enters Districts with 30 wins.
220: Top-seeded Nick Barnes of Collingswood was the D28 champ at 182 in 2016. Shawnee's Cadrick Augustin (23-5) is seeded #2, while Maple Shade senior Sean McGlinn at 15-13 is the 3-seed. This trio are the only three entrants above .500 and will likely be a tough top three to break.
Hwt: An absolute rarity these days, a full heavyweight bracket. TR South's Jon Kobus, 3rd in D24 last season, is the top seed and only entrant here with a District medal on his resume.
