2017 DISTRICT 29 PREVIEW
DISTRICT 29 @ Southern
Teams: Atlantic City, Cedar Creek, Holy Spirit, Kingsway, Ocean City, Schalick, Southern, Washington, Woodstown
106: (Fr) Jayson Scerbo - 4th Seed (11-13)
Just a 6-man bracket. Scerbo will open with fellow freshman Luke Spotts of Holy Spirit in the 4/5. The winner gets top-seed McKenzie Bell of Kingsway who leaped Washington Twp's Tom Cole for the spot by majoring him earlier this season.
113: (Jr) Owen Kretschmer - Top Seed (24-7)
Kretschmer, a 2-time D24 medal winner, placed 4th in R6 last year. He's in a deep weight here with five wrestlers with at least 21 wins. He opens with Holy Spirit frosh Kevin Mason, and would then face the winner of #4 Nick Loesch of Ocean City vs. #5 Nick Flamma of Washington. If the seeds hold, the semifinal matchup of #2 Jack Prendergast of Woodstown vs. #3 Cheney Kinner of Kingsway would be a rematch of a bout won by Prendergast, 6-2.
120: (So) Sebastian Delligatti - 4th Seed (13-7)
Delligatti opens with #5 Peyton Bristol, a 17-10 junior out of Ocean City. The winner will face #1 Dominic Sacco of Holy Spirit.
126: (So) Nicholas Pepe - 3rd Seed (16-10)
The 3rd-seeded Pepe will open up with Cedar Creek's 6th-seeded Anthony Alcatara. The winner will most likely get the #2 seed, Atlee Cullison of Kingsway. With no returning medal winners in this weight, this could be a pretty wide open field.
132: (Jr) Matt Barnett - 2nd Seed (18-6)
Barnett finished 3rd in D24 and then went on to take 3rd in the Region to qualify for the State Tournament. The top seed here is Kingsway's Quinn Kinner, who finished 3rd in the State at 126 last season. In order for Barnett to get a shot at him, he'll have to first face #7 Justin Gubbins of Cedar Creek. A win there, and his probable opponent would be Ocean City's Cameron Andres, a 19-3 senior from Ocean City.
138: (Sr) Ryan Hill - 8th Seed (10-7)
One of the highly anticipated finals would be #1 Trace Kinner of Kingsway (3-time D31 champ, 2-time R8 champ, 6th NJ in 2015) vs. #2 Travis Laywon of Woodstown, the undefeated senior who placed 6th in NJ last year at 126. Southern's Ryan Hill is all the way down in the 8-slot is lined up to face Kinner, if Hill wins his prelim.
145: (So) Nicholas O'Connell - Top Seed (25-5)
The top-seeded O'Connell will have a bye into the semifinals where he will face the winner of #4 Steven Italiano of Schalick vs. Carlos Whitted of Atlantic City. A win there, and it would be a trip to the finals where he would likely face either #2 Evan Fisler of Washington, a 2-time D30 champ and a State-qualifier in 2015, or #3 Nicolas Bonowski of Woodstown, a 3-time D31 medalist.
152: (Jr) Dan Gorman - 3rd Seed (18-9)
Gorman opens up with #6 Luis Salinas-Juarez of Atlantic City, an 11-6 senior. If he wins there, he'll most likely get #2 Joe Gaspari of Washington, a 21-2 senior from Washington Twp.
160: (So) John Stout - 4th Seed (18-11)
Stout will open in the 4/5 against Robert Parkell, a 20-bout winner from Woodstown. The winner will face #1 Tim Fitzpatrick of Holy Spirit (27-6) who finished 8th at this year's Beast of the East.
170: (Sr) Crew Truex - 7th Seed (5-10)
Overall, this looks to be one of the more wide open weights here. Truex opens with the #2 seed, Kennard Hildreth of Woodstown, who is 17-13 on the year.
182: (Jr) Vin Miele - 3rd Seed (17-11)
Miele will open up with 6th-seeded Gabriel Eberly (9-10), a senior from Ocean City. The winner will face the winner of #2 Curtis Thomas (17-9) of Schalick vs. #7 Austin Burritt of Woodstown. Top-seeded Michael Waszen of Holy Spirit is the lone returning medal winner of this group, having finished 2nd in D32 at 182 last season.
195: (Jr) Matt Mackanic - 7th Seed (6-4)
Mackanic ended up in the opposite bracket from the top-seeded Chad Watt of Woodstown, a 2-time D31 champ and 2016 R8 champ at 195. He'll open in the quarters against Atlantic City's Franco Castillo, who jumped into the 2-seed by defeating now #3 Johnny Seguinot of Cedar Creek, 4-3 in overtime.
220: (Sr) Dan Lynch - Top Seed (17-6)
It's a 7-man bracket, so the top-seeded Lynch will receive a bye into the semifinals where he will take on the winner of #4 Tyree Newman (15-8) of Schalick vs #5 Tyler McGovern (5-11) of Washington.
Hwt: (Sr) Evan Giberson - 4th Seed (10-11)
5th-seeded Hunter Batten (6-17) will be the opening opponent for Giberson. If he can win that one, he'll most likely face the top-seed, Reggie Jean Charles (19-1) of Holy Spirit.
